Cincinnati Expands Summer Youth Programs as Shootings Drop Over 30%
Cincinnati city leaders have unveiled an expanded summer safety plan aimed at reducing youth violent crime, which typically spikes during warmer months. Police data shows a significant decline in shootings and youth crime this year, with shootings down over 30% compared to last year and at their lowest level since 2010. The plan focuses on increasing patrols in six high-priority areas, towing illegally parked cars, and engaging youth through expanded recreational programs such as free skating on the riverfront, full operation of all 23 public pools, and the return of the popular Rec @ Nite events at Lincoln and Hirsch recreation centers every Saturday night. These programs, which include activities like DJs, e-sports, food trucks, and barbers, aim to provide constructive and social outlets for teens to keep them off the streets and away from negative influences, with community groups like Skate Downtown Cincy playing a key role. City officials emphasize the importance of community collaboration alongside police efforts to continue improving safety and inclusivity throughout the summer. The initiative builds on last year's successful pilot program that served over 3,000 teens and received a statewide award.
