UK Festival Workers Face Unsafe, Brutal Conditions Amid Safety Concerns

A report from the entertainment union Bectu highlights alarming working conditions for UK festival staff, with many workers facing excessive hours, inadequate sanitation, and unsafe environments. Approximately half of the surveyed 100 festival workers reported feeling unsafe at work, with over a third experiencing physical safety risks. Issues such as overflowing toilets, lack of access to running water, and overcrowded sleeping accommodations were prevalent, with some crew members even collapsing from heatstroke during extreme weather conditions. Bectu's Head, Philippa Childs, compared the current state of festival working conditions to the 'wild west,' emphasizing the normalization of such issues among skilled professionals.
