Apalachee Coach Resigns After 2024 Shooting

Mike Hancock, head football coach at Apalachee High School, has announced his resignation to focus on addressing his mental health issues stemming from a mass shooting at the school in September 2024. The tragic incident resulted in the deaths of two students and two staff members, including Hancock's defensive coordinator, Richard Aspinwall. Hancock has been open about his struggles with PTSD, anxiety, grief, and depression and has begun working with a Christian counselor to aid in his recovery. He hopes his public resignation will encourage other coaches facing similar challenges to seek help. Following the shooting, the school's football team canceled games and struggled through a winless season. The suspected shooter has been charged with multiple counts of murder, and his father faces charges for allegedly providing the weapon used in the attack.
