SNAP Benefits Increase Starting October 2024

Starting October 1, 2024, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will see a cost of living adjustment, increasing the maximum allotments for beneficiaries, with each additional person in a household adding $220 to the monthly benefits. The eligibility for SNAP is based on household income and assets, with certain exemptions from work requirements for groups such as the homeless, veterans, and those with physical or mental limitations. Additionally, ten states have been awarded $4.9 million in federal grants to combat SNAP benefit fraud, which includes implementing protective card technology and educating recipients on fraud risks. Over 42 million people in the United States benefited from SNAP in 2023, with participation rates varying by state. The adjustments will be effective until September 30, 2025.
