Waymo has announced a strategic partnership with Hyundai to integrate the IONIQ 5 electric vehicle into its robotaxi fleet, with on-road testing projected to commence by late 2025. This collaboration aims to enhance Waymo's autonomous ride-hailing service, Waymo One, by equipping the IONIQ 5 with Waymo's advanced sixth-generation autonomous technology, designed for safe operation in diverse conditions. Hyundai will manufacture the IONIQ 5 at its new facility in Georgia, incorporating modifications such as redundant hardware and power-operated doors. This alliance comes as Waymo continues to expand its operations, recently making its service available to all users in San Francisco and metro Phoenix. Additionally, the partnership signals Hyundai's commitment to sustainable mobility and innovation in the EV sector, especially after restructuring its previous autonomous vehicle venture. Waymo currently operates a fleet of about 700 vehicles, which includes various models as it phases out older platforms.
