Israel Cabinet Approves $840M Benefits Package for IDF Reservists

The Israeli government has approved a comprehensive benefits package worth approximately NIS 3 billion ($840 million) to support Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reservists, their families, and employers amid expanded military operations in Gaza. The package includes increased tax credits, grants for employers, discounted access to government housing programs, priority in government services, support for small businesses, and a digital welfare wallet of up to NIS 5,000 for reservists. Additionally, reserve officers will receive monthly grants, and there are specific benefits tailored for immigrant reservists and discharged soldiers. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized the importance of rewarding reservists for their sacrifices, with Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Defense Minister Israel Katz highlighting the significant economic and social burdens faced by reservists and their families. The IDF welcomed the plan as a reflection of national recognition for reservists' vital contributions and pledged cooperation in its implementation. This package follows concerns over the economic hardships reservists endure, including job losses and business closures, and comes amid political tensions related to military draft exemptions for Haredi men.
