Michigan Woman Wins $100K Powerball Using ChatGPT
Tammy Carvey, 45, of Wyandotte, Michigan, says she asked ChatGPT to generate Powerball numbers for the Sept. 6 drawing and bought the ticket online, matching four white balls plus the Powerball to win a $50,000 prize that was doubled to $100,000 by the Power Play. The win occurred during the $1.787 billion Powerball drawing; Carvey first thought she had won $50,000 until she logged into her Michigan Lottery account, and later claimed the prize at Michigan Lottery headquarters. She said she will use the money to pay off her home and save the remainder. The Michigan Lottery emphasized that drawings are random and cannot be predicted by AI or other number-generating tools. The episode adds to a small but growing number of players who report using AI (including another recent winner, Carrie Edwards) to pick numbers, and observers note the novelty of using chatbots for games of chance even as lotteries explore AI for security and fraud detection.
