UK Pub Count Drops Below 39,000
The number of pubs in England and Wales has fallen below 39,000 for the first time, with 412 closures reported in the past year, according to Altus Group. The decline marks the sharpest rate of closures since 2021, averaging over 34 pubs shut per month, driven by rising operational costs and cautious consumer spending. This trend has led to a total loss of more than 2,000 pubs since 2020, exacerbated by policy changes set to take effect in 2025, including increased national insurance contributions and reduced business rates relief. Industry leaders, including Emma McClarkin of the British Beer and Pub Association, are calling for urgent reforms to business rates to prevent further closures and economic impacts. London experienced the highest number of losses, with a reduction of 55 pubs, highlighting regional disparities in the decline. The future viability of many pubs is in jeopardy, as operators express concerns that upcoming financial burdens could lead to more establishments closing their doors permanently.
