Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Appears in Wheelchair at Jackie Robinson Day
NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar attended Jackie Robinson Day at Dodger Stadium, surprising and concerning fans by arriving in a wheelchair due to needing assistance following hip surgery 15 months ago. Although capable of standing and walking, the 78-year-old Hall of Famer used the wheelchair for mobility at the event, prompting an outpouring of emotional responses from fans who expressed sadness at seeing the basketball great aging and in fragile health. Despite these concerns, Abdul-Jabbar appeared in good spirits, delivering a heartfelt speech about Jackie Robinson’s impact on sports and the Black community, and reflecting on his own roots as a Brooklyn Dodgers fan. He recalled Robinson’s legacy of breaking baseball’s color barrier and serving as a role model for excellence and perseverance. Abdul-Jabbar also shared personal anecdotes about his admiration for Robinson, including their shared connection to UCLA and Robinson's principled stand during his military service. The tribute was part of MLB’s annual tradition in which all players wear No. 42 to honor Robinson’s historic achievements.
