Jaime Esparza steps down as U.S. Attorney for Western Texas

Jaime Esparza has resigned as the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas, effective February 12, after serving since his Senate confirmation in December 2022. During his tenure, he oversaw more than 41,000 federal criminal prosecutions, focusing on immigration, drugs, firearms, and violent crimes, while also addressing issues like fentanyl awareness and domestic violence. Following his departure, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Margaret Leachman has assumed the role of Acting U.S. Attorney. Esparza's resignation is part of a trend, as several U.S. Attorneys appointed by President Biden have recently left their positions. His prior experience includes serving as the District Attorney for the 34th Judicial District of Texas from 1993 to 2020. No reasons for his resignation were disclosed, and it remains unclear when a new nominee will be announced.
