Nearly 70% India's Elderly Financially Dependent Facing Health Challenges

Recent reports highlight significant financial and health challenges faced by nearly 70% of India's elderly population, many of whom remain financially dependent and continue working post-retirement. The Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) shows widespread issues such as hunger, malnutrition, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, bone and joint problems, and rising mental health concerns including depression among seniors. The erosion of joint family systems has exacerbated loneliness, particularly among elderly women, prompting calls for enhanced inter-ministerial efforts and public campaigns to combat age discrimination. The government has implemented administrative reforms like Pension Adalats and the CPENGRAMS online platform to provide efficient grievance redressal for pensioners, aiming to resolve issues within 21 days. Fiscal policies also support senior citizens, with new tax benefits under the FY 2024-25 regime, including increased deductions and exemptions, and provisions allowing some seniors to avoid filing income tax returns. Additionally, the government mandates insurers to submit unclaimed funds to the Senior Citizens' Welfare Fund, aligning with broader efforts to ensure the welfare and financial security of the ageing population.
