Google Japan Unveils Open-Source Rotary Dial Gboard Keyboard Concept
Google Japan has developed an innovative and unconventional keyboard called the Gboard Dial Version, inspired by old rotary telephones. This keyboard replaces traditional keys with nine mechanical dials, each controlling different characters or functions, including letters, numbers, punctuation, and even the return key. Users type by inserting their finger into a dial’s hole and rotating it to select characters, a process that is slower but designed to reduce strain from repetitive key presses. The project is open-source, with complete plans and schematics available on GitHub for DIY enthusiasts to 3D print and build their own versions. Additionally, the keyboard includes a unique mouse stand accessory that turns off the webcam and microphone during video calls, mimicking the act of hanging up a rotary phone. While not a commercial product, the Gboard Dial Version continues Google Japan's tradition of creative hardware experiments, prioritizing novelty and user experience over typing speed or efficiency.
