16-Year-Old Arrested in Oakland Teen's Fatal Shooting During Robbery Attempt
A 15-year-old Oakland boy, Derbing Alvarado, was shot and killed on Monday during an attempted robbery while walking with friends to soccer practice. Witnesses report that two suspects approached the group and demanded Alvarado's backpack, leading to a scuffle in which he was shot. A 16-year-old suspect has since been arrested on suspicion of murder. Friends and family held a vigil in his memory, expressing disbelief and sorrow over the senseless nature of the violence, especially as Alvarado was known for his protective nature and kindness. The incident has prompted widespread mourning within the community and at Cristo Rey De La Salle High School, where Alvarado was a sophomore. A GoFundMe campaign for his family has raised nearly $80,000 in support.
