India's Laptop Import Policy Guidelines Under Review

Union Minister Piyush Goyal announced that new guidelines regarding India's laptop import policy are still under deliberation by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The government recently extended the approval system for importing IT hardware products, including laptops and tablets, until December 31, 2024, while total imports for 2023-24 are recorded at $8.4 billion, primarily sourced from China. Importers are permitted to apply for authorizations valid until the end of 2024, but will need to submit fresh applications starting January 1, 2025. Goyal also expressed optimism about India's export potential, targeting $800 billion by 2025, and praised SoftBank's CEO Masayoshi Son for his commitment to increasing investments in India. The minister highlighted that global investor interest is rising, attributed to Prime Minister Modi's economic policies.
