Archaeologists Uncover Multiple Roman-Era Sites in Manchester, Worcestershire, St Albans

Archaeologists have made significant Roman-era discoveries in England, including a well-preserved Roman road unearthed just beneath Liverpool Road in Manchester's city center, considered one of the most important finds in over 20 years. The road, found about 15 inches below street level, shows multiple layers of repairs and was constructed with compacted gravel, indicating advanced Roman engineering, and was accompanied by domestic and imported pottery and glassware dating from the first to fourth centuries C.E., suggesting a nearby Roman settlement. In St Albans, a public archaeological dig at the Rose & Crown pub revealed medieval and Roman pottery, tesserae, and painted wall plaster, offering locals a rare look at the excavation process and previously undiscovered Roman materials in that area. Meanwhile, at New Farm Nature Reserve in Worcestershire, storytelling events alongside displays of ancient artifacts help bring to life the lives of Iron Age and Roman people who lived near the River Avon. Additionally, at George Washington's Mount Vernon estate, archaeologists discovered two intact European-manufactured bottles beneath the mansion floor containing liquid with preserved cherries, a rare pre-Revolutionary War find that connects to a famous cherry tree legend.
