West Midlands Police expands speed camera fleet to enhance road safety

West Midlands Police are enhancing road safety with the addition of four new high-tech speed camera vans, bringing their total to eight. These vans, which cost £188,000, can monitor various traffic violations including speeding, drunk driving, seatbelt use, and mobile phone usage from a mile away. The initiative, backed by Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster, aims to halve the number of road-related deaths and injuries by 2030 and achieve 'Vision Zero' by 2041. Superintendent Gareth Mason emphasized the importance of these mobile units in targeting high-risk areas, stating that speeding is a significant contributor to road fatalities. The initiative reflects a commitment to prevent tragedies and improve compliance with traffic laws in the region.
