Martina McBride Testifies in Senate Supporting Federal Deepfake Protections

Country music star Martina McBride testified before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law in support of the bipartisan NO FAKES Act, legislation aiming to protect artists from unauthorized AI-generated deepfakes of their voice, likeness, and image. McBride described AI deepfakes as "just terrifying" and highlighted the potential harm to artists, including the risk of damaging the trust they have built with fans and the possibility of exploitation even after death. The NO FAKES Act would establish a federal property right for individuals' voice and likeness, provide victims with effective legal recourse, and hold platforms accountable for hosting deepfakes. The bill has garnered widespread support from the music industry, creative communities, and over 390 artists, including Cardi B, Randy Travis, Mary J. Blige, and the Dave Matthews Band. McBride emphasized that the legislation balances protecting individual rights with encouraging responsible AI innovation while preserving authenticity and integrity. She urged Congress to pass the bill promptly to safeguard artists and set America on a path to develop ethical AI technologies.
