Met Police Serjeant Arrested Amid Charing Cross Misconduct Investigation
A serving Metropolitan Police sergeant from Charing Cross Police Station was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice following an undercover BBC Panorama investigation that exposed officers making racist, misogynistic, and violent remarks. The undercover footage revealed officers calling for immigrants to be shot and boasting about violence against suspects, leading to widespread condemnation from officials including Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. The arrested officer has been bailed and suspended from duty, with the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards conducting the investigation and the Independent Office for Police Conduct independently overseeing related allegations. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Valentine emphasized the force’s commitment to addressing misconduct and corruption within the Met, particularly at Charing Cross, and vowed swift action against officers unfit to serve. The investigation also involves multiple officers and a civilian member of staff under scrutiny for gross misconduct related to discriminatory behavior and failure to report inappropriate conduct. This incident follows a 2023 report labeling the Met as "institutionally racist, misogynistic and homophobic," highlighting ongoing challenges in reforming the police force.
