Southampton Stun Wrexham With Late Comeback Win
Wrexham's return to the English Championship after 43 years ended in a dramatic 2-1 defeat to Southampton, who scored twice in stoppage time. Wrexham took the lead through a 22nd-minute penalty but were pegged back when Southampton's Ryan Manning equalized with a free-kick in the 90th minute. Manning then assisted Jack Stephens for the winning goal deep into added time, ending Wrexham's hopes of a fairytale result. The game pitted Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson, the division's most experienced boss, against Southampton's 32-year-old Will Still, making his English football debut. Southampton, recently relegated from the Premier League, underlined the difficulties awaiting Wrexham in the Championship. Wrexham's Hollywood owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, watched as their team fell just short despite a spirited display.
