Phoenix, Chandler Launch 24/7 Cooling Centers Amid Extreme Heat

Phoenix and Chandler have launched several heat respite and cooling centers to provide relief from extreme heat during the summer months. Phoenix's new 24/7 cooling center, located on Jackson Street downtown, offers water, a cool indoor space, outdoor areas for pets, and housing resources but does not provide overnight shelter beds. The center is open from May through September to help reduce heat-related illnesses and fatalities, with case management available to connect visitors to city resources. Chandler's respite center at AZCEND operates mostly during daytime hours with extended availability during heat warnings, providing air conditioning, hydration, snacks, rest areas, showers, laundry, and community navigation services. Additionally, Chandler has eight cooling stations offering water and snacks at various libraries and recreation centers around the city. These coordinated efforts by both cities, in partnership with public health organizations, aim to safeguard vulnerable populations against the dangers of extreme heat in the region.
