Virginia Basketball Wins Season Opener 65-56

The University of Virginia men's basketball team kicked off the 2024-2025 season with a 65-56 victory over Campbell, marking the beginning of the Ron Sanchez era following Tony Bennett's retirement. Freshman Jacob Cofie led the Cavaliers with 16 points, showcasing impressive shooting, while Elijah Saunders contributed 11 points and nine came in the second half. The team demonstrated notable offensive improvement, hitting 57% of their shots and 46% from three-point range. Sanchez, who served on Bennett's staff for a decade, acknowledged the emotional significance of starting a new chapter. Despite some struggles, including turnovers from point guard Andrew Rohde, the Cavaliers maintained control to secure the win. They will next face Coppin State at home on November 11th.
