Retired Boxer Disarms Gunman in West Hollywood

Around 1 p.m. Wednesday on the 900 block of North Sweetzer Avenue in West Hollywood, a masked man jumped out of a dark sedan wielding a semiautomatic handgun and demanded a retired professional fighter’s Rolex. The ex-fighter disarmed and pinned the assailant while his girlfriend grabbed the loaded gun and tossed it over a nearby fence. Neighbors and a utility worker helped restrain the suspect, and a witness said the attacker’s arm became dislocated during the struggle. Deputies recovered the firearm and took the alleged robber into custody while a second occupant of the sedan fled the scene. Surveillance and witness video captured parts of the confrontation, which occurred minutes from West Hollywood City Hall, and officials have not reported additional injuries or charges in initial accounts.
