Australian Team Makes Major HIV Cure Advance
Researchers at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Melbourne have developed a novel lipid nanoparticle (LNP X) that delivers mRNA into white blood cells where HIV hides, causing the virus to emerge and potentially enabling its elimination. Laboratory tests on cells from HIV patients have shown consistently promising results, raising hopes that this could be a pathway to fully clearing the virus from the body. The use of mRNA technology in these cells was previously considered impossible. Experts highlight that further animal studies and human safety trials are required before the method can be used in clinical settings. This breakthrough comes amid other recent advances in HIV research, including gene-editing and rare cases of complete cures, fueling renewed optimism. Scientists remain hopeful but acknowledge that a clinically available cure is still years away.
