Indian police detained around 100 workers from a Samsung Electronics plant near Chennai for planning a protest march without permission, escalating a week-long strike that has disrupted production at the facility contributing a third of Samsung's $12 billion annual revenue in India. The workers demand higher wages, better working conditions, and the recognition of a union backed by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), which Samsung is reluctant to acknowledge. The detentions were justified by authorities citing the potential disruption to nearby schools, colleges, and hospitals. Most of the detained workers were eventually released, except for a few union leaders. Talks between Samsung, the workers, and state officials have yet to resolve the conflict, and additional protests are planned by other union groups in support of the striking workers.
