Gatik, Loblaw Plan Largest Autonomous Truckrollout in North America

Gatik, an autonomous freight company, has announced a multi-year expansion deal with Loblaw Companies Ltd., Canada's largest retailer, to deploy a fleet of 50 autonomous trucks across Loblaw's Greater Toronto Area distribution network by the end of 2026. The rollout, the largest planned autonomous truck deployment in North America, will initially involve 20 trucks by the end of 2025 and an additional 30 by 2026, transitioning from safety drivers onboard to fully driverless freight-only operations. This expansion marks a move from pilot testing to scaled commercial operations, serving over 300 Loblaw stores including Shoppers Drug Mart and No Frills. Loblaw has also made a strategic investment in Gatik to accelerate fleet expansion and geographic growth, underscoring its commitment to future-proofing its supply chain amid driver shortages. Gatik’s technology, enhanced by collaborations with AI partners, will operate on short-haul, middle-mile routes and benefit from Ontario's new automated commercial motor vehicle program prioritizing safety. The partnership highlights significant progress in autonomous logistics, aiming to improve reliability, safety, and responsiveness in goods delivery.
