Hundreds March, Multiple Cities Celebrate Juneteenth Freedom Day

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and was marked by various celebrations across the country in 2025. In Birmingham, Alabama, events included educational programs at the Civil Rights Institute and a conference bringing together Black entrepreneurs to reflect on the significance of Juneteenth and foster community and economic growth. Washington, D.C.'s Anacostia neighborhood held a Freedom and Unity March retracing the path freed slaves walked over 173 years ago, emphasizing the importance of teaching younger generations about freedom and unity. Montgomery, Alabama, hosted multiple celebrations featuring speeches from Bryan Stevenson of the Equal Justice Initiative, who highlighted ongoing struggles for racial equality and called for continued activism. Other communities such as Elkhart, Indiana, also participated in festivities, often integrating cultural elements like jazz festivals.
