Violence Erupts in Manipur, Six Dead

Ethnic violence in Manipur, India, has escalated, leading to the recovery of six bodies of women and children and igniting protests both locally and in New Delhi. Demonstrators, including over 300 Meiteis, protested against alleged killings by Kuki militant groups, demanding government action and accountability, resulting in the detention of many participants in Delhi. In response to the unrest, Manipur police have arrested 23 individuals for vandalism and arson against lawmakers' homes, while an indefinite curfew and internet blackout were implemented in several districts. The violence, linked to ongoing intercommunal clashes between the Hindu Meitei and Christian Kuki communities, has claimed at least 250 lives since May 2023 and displaced around 60,000 people.
