Meanwhile, South Cambridgeshire District Council obtained a High Court injunction banning more caravans at The Laurels site near Cambridge after a fire destroyed multiple caravans and outbuildings; the site had planning permission for only seven pitches intended for Gypsy and Traveller communities, but had been used for many more, including unauthorized occupants. Both councils emphasized public safety risks, especially fire hazards, as key reasons for the injunctions, and are assessing how to manage remaining caravans while offering support to displaced individuals. These legal actions reflect ongoing challenges in balancing planning regulations, community safety, and the needs of traveller populations. The injunction in Cambridge will remain in place until May 2026, underscoring the seriousness of the authorities' response.
