Nissan, Honda, and Mitsubishi have formally partnered to enhance their electric vehicle (EV) capabilities through joint research and development. This collaboration comes in response to challenges posed by the competitive EV market, particularly in China, where traditional Japanese automakers have struggled against rivals like Tesla and BYD. The three companies will focus on sharing core components such as batteries and software for autonomous driving, aiming to leverage their combined strengths for innovation in electrification and automotive intelligence. Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida and Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe emphasized the need for collaboration, stating that without it, survival in the rapidly evolving automotive landscape is at risk. The partnership seeks not only to cut costs through economies of scale but also to ensure the development of unique products tailored to diverse consumer needs. The companies plan to complete their research within a year and maintain their individual brand offerings while sharing resources strategically.
