Baltimore Police Release Footage of Fatal Shooting

Baltimore police released body-worn camera footage from the fatal shooting of 54-year-old Robert Nedd Jr. on October 9, after he fled from a car accident. Nedd, who was prohibited from possessing a firearm, was shot by officers after they ordered him to show his hands while he was hiding in a wooded area. Police Commissioner Richard Worley stated that officers perceived a threat when they believed Nedd had a weapon, which was later confirmed to be a gun found at the scene. In a separate incident on September 21 in Silver Spring, 31-year-old Melvin Omar Chavez-Paz was shot and killed by police after he refused to drop a grill fork, which was mistaken for a knife. Both incidents have raised questions about police use of force, leading to administrative leaves for the officers involved. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing as community concerns about police engagement and accountability continue to grow.
