Swedish prosecutors have charged Lina Laina Ishaq, a 52-year-old woman, with genocide, crimes against humanity, and severe war crimes for her actions against Yazidi women and children in Syria between 2014 and 2016, marking the first such case in Sweden related to the Islamic State (IS). Ishaq is accused of enslaving and subjecting Yazidi women and children to severe suffering while residing in Raqqa, which was under IS control. Prosecutor Reena Devgun highlighted that these charges represent a significant step in addressing the atrocities committed against the Yazidi minority. Ishaq previously served a three-year prison sentence in Sweden for taking her son to Syria and faces trial starting October 7, which is expected to last two months. She denies the allegations, claiming she traveled to Turkey for a holiday before crossing into Syria, and has faced previous convictions related to her actions in that region. This case underscores Sweden's commitment to prosecuting international law crimes committed abroad.
