Colorado Builds World’s Largest Wildlife Overpass on I-25
A major wildlife overpass is under construction over Interstate 25 near the Greenland Interchange in Douglas County, Colorado, designed to be the largest wildlife crossing in the world. The overpass will span six lanes of highway, measure approximately 200 feet wide and 209 feet long, and connect 39,000 acres of habitat, addressing the frequent collisions between drivers and large game animals like elk, mule deer, and pronghorns. Funded partly through the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the $15 million project aims to reduce wildlife-vehicle crashes by up to 90% and complete an 18-mile mitigation system featuring underpasses and fencing. Colorado Department of Transportation officials and U.S. Senator Michael Bennet highlighted the collaboration and federal support that made the project possible and emphasized the continued need for federal investment in infrastructure. Meanwhile, in India, environmental experts overseeing the Bengaluru–Chennai Greenfield Expressway through forest areas stressed the importance of wildlife-safe road design, including underpasses, chain-link fencing, and GPS-based wildlife monitoring to protect biodiversity and ensure safe animal movement. Both projects underscore growing global efforts to integrate infrastructure development with wildlife conservation to reduce animal fatalities and maintain ecological connectivity.
