England Captain Stokes Retires Unbeaten at 66, Achieves Historic Five-Wicket Haul vs India
England captain Ben Stokes has made a historic impact in the ongoing fourth Test against India at Old Trafford, Manchester. He took five wickets for 72 runs in the first innings, becoming the first England Test captain in 42 years to take a five-wicket haul on home soil, with the last being Bob Willis in 1983. Stokes also scored an unbeaten 66 runs, marking him as the third English captain in 89 years to achieve the feat of scoring 50 runs and taking five wickets in the same Test match. His innings was cut short due to cramp, leading him to retire hurt, but he left England in a commanding position with the team at 491-4. This performance was complemented by a century from Joe Root, who is now second on the all-time list of Test run scorers behind Sachin Tendulkar. The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed that Stokes’ injury was cramp, and he was replaced by wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.
