The Australian government has introduced the National Gender Equity in Sport Governance Policy, mandating that by July 1, 2027, 50% of all board directors, chairs, and specified sub-committee members in national and state-level sporting organizations must be women or gender diverse. This policy aims to address the significant underrepresentation of women in governance and leadership roles despite equal participation rates in sports. Organizations failing to meet these targets will risk losing government funding. Currently, only 25% of national sporting organizations have female chairs, and 62% meet the gender diversity benchmark for board directors. The policy, developed by the Australian Sports Commission in collaboration with State and Territory Agencies for Sport and Recreation, includes annual reporting requirements to monitor progress.
