EU Launches Strategy to Lead Quantum Technology by 2030

The European Commission has unveiled a comprehensive strategy to position the EU as the global leader in quantum technology by 2030, aiming to address current fragmentation in regulations, financing, and research efforts across member states. Despite leading in quantum research and hosting a significant portion of global quantum companies, the EU attracts only 5% of private investment compared to 50% in the US, prompting a strong focus on boosting private funding to help scale startups and retain talent. The strategy emphasizes the commercialization of quantum technologies with applications in healthcare, defense, cybersecurity, and secure communications, while also preparing for post-quantum encryption to protect against future security threats. Plans include launching pilot quantum manufacturing lines, encouraging public sector adoption, and coordinating EU-wide efforts to pool expertise and resources. The initiative highlights the dual-use nature of quantum technology, which serves both civilian and military purposes, and aims to create thousands of highly skilled jobs by 2040 with a projected global market value exceeding €155 billion. Legislation dubbed the Quantum Act is expected next year to further solidify these commitments and promote a resilient, sovereign quantum ecosystem in Europe.
