In a recent interview, he clarified that he had pitched two possible endings for his character to the show's creator, Taylor Sheridan, but ultimately, the decision was left to the producers. Costner expressed that he wasn't surprised by the character's demise, which was depicted as orchestrated by a plot involving Sarah Atwood, and noted he hadn't seen the episode yet, stating, 'I didn’t know it was actually airing last night.' He emphasized that scheduling conflicts with his film project Horizon: An American Saga were the reason for his exit from the series, asserting, 'I didn’t leave. I didn’t quit.' Despite the fan outrage, he stated, 'They do what they want to do. That's fine with me.' Costner remains focused on completing the Horizon project, hinting at plans for its second chapter.
