Memorial Weekend to Honor 140 Fallen Firefighters in Maryland

Capt. Brad Alan Sherwood of Cedar Falls Fire Rescue, who died from a heart attack following a demanding shift in February 2024, will be honored at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend in Emmitsburg, Maryland. He is among 140 firefighters being remembered, including those who died in the line of duty in 2024 and in previous years, with memorial events taking place May 3–4. The ceremony serves as a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of fallen firefighters, bringing together families, colleagues, and community members to honor their legacy. Sherwood served as a firefighter and EMT for 27 years and was remembered locally with tributes such as lighting red lights at the fire station and sounding the siren. The memorial services, which include candlelight and memorial gatherings, will be live streamed to allow broader participation. Leaders emphasized the importance of honoring the bravery and dedication of those who served their communities.
