Multiple Elementary Schools Lag State, District Scores
New standardized-test data show several elementary schools performing below their district and state averages. Charles M. Johnson Elementary (Henrico County, VA) reported 42% proficiency in math and 32% in reading, versus district averages of 62% and 56% and Virginia averages of 68% and 65%. Ducketts Lane Elementary (Howard County, MD) recorded 22% math and 26% reading, trailing district (44% math, 54% reading) and Maryland averages (28% math, 42% reading). Thomas Jefferson Intermediate (Trenton, NJ), serving grades 4–6, reported just 6% math proficiency and is unranked. Bess T. Shepherd Elementary (Hamilton County, TN) recorded 24% math and 21% reading, below both district and Tennessee averages, while Bailey's Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences (Falls Church, VA) serves 817 PK–2 students with a 14:1 ratio and 64% economically disadvantaged but has no available statewide test data and is unranked.
