Trial of Seven Medical Professionals Begins Over Maradona's Death

Four years after Diego Maradona's death, seven healthcare professionals are set to stand trial for alleged medical negligence during his final days. The trial, beginning next week in San Isidro, Buenos Aires, will feature over 100 witnesses, including Maradona's family and past doctors. The defendants, facing charges that could result in 8 to 25 years in prison, are accused of providing 'reckless' and 'deficient' treatment, which left Maradona in a prolonged and agonizing state before his death from a heart attack on November 25, 2020. Prosecutors argue that he was abandoned while recovering from brain surgery, with a medical panel suggesting he might have survived with proper care. Maradona's death deeply affected Argentina, leading to national mourning as tens of thousands paid their respects. Another nurse involved in his care will be tried separately in July.
