India Supreme Court Unveils Modern Justice Statue

The Supreme Court of India has unveiled a new statue of Lady Justice, signaling a departure from traditional representations and colonial influences. Commissioned under Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, the statue replaces the blindfold with open eyes and the sword with the Indian Constitution, emphasizing that the law is not blind but sees everyone equally. The statue, now dressed in a saree rather than a Western robe, reflects a deeper connection to Indian cultural identity and a modernized justice system. The scales of justice remain, symbolizing the balance and fair consideration of cases. This change is part of broader efforts to decolonize Indian laws, replacing the Indian Penal Code with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The unveiling coincides with the 75th anniversary celebrations of the Supreme Court, which also saw the introduction of a new flag and insignia.
