South Miami-Dade Wildfire: NASCAR Events Continue

The 344 Fire, a massive wildfire in Southwest Miami-Dade, has burned for over a week, scorching more than 26,000 acres, and is now 65% contained, according to fire officials. Efforts to combat the blaze include using helicopters and airplanes for water drops, and ground crews are engaged in 'mop-up' operations to extinguish remaining spot fires. The fire has resulted in intermittent closures of U.S. 1 and Card Sound Road, though they are currently open. Despite the blaze, NASCAR events at Homestead Miami Speedway have continued without interruption. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Andy Alvarez emphasized the importance of containment due to the proximity of local correctional centers and the ongoing NASCAR race. Residents are advised to monitor conditions due to the persistent smoke, which could pose respiratory risks.
