IESO Approves Bruce Power Unit 5 Replacement Project, Ensures Decades of Clean Energy

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has approved Bruce Power's Unit 5 Major Component Replacement (MCR) project, marking the fourth of six units to undergo refurbishment as part of a larger life-extension initiative at the Bruce nuclear power station. The refurbishment is expected to enhance generating capacity from 6,550 MW to over 7,000 MW by the 2030s, while also providing stable supplies of medical isotopes. Ontario's Energy Minister Stephen Lecce emphasized the government's commitment to affordable power and job creation, with over 90% of materials sourced from Canadian manufacturers. The MCR projects are projected to generate $10 billion annually in economic activity and support around 22,000 jobs across the province. This initiative is a crucial part of Canada's largest private sector clean energy infrastructure project. Bruce Power aims to ensure a reliable electricity supply for Ontario over the coming decades.
