Sadiq Khan Launches GPS Tagging for Stalking Offenders

London's Mayor Sadiq Khan has announced a new pilot scheme to combat stalking, which will see over 200 stalking offenders fitted with GPS tags upon their release from prison. The initiative, set to launch by March 2026, aims to enhance victim protection and reduce re-offending rates, incorporating input from victim and survivor organizations. For the first time, the program will also track individuals receiving community sentences, broadening the scope of monitoring. The £5.7 million scheme is part of a larger £233 million investment in addressing violence against women and girls, with an emphasis on changing offender behavior rather than placing the burden on victims. Victims' commissioner Claire Waxman praised the project as a significant step forward in enhancing safety for victims. The pilot is designed to ensure strict compliance, with breaches potentially leading to imprisonment, demonstrating a proactive approach to managing stalking offenders.
