Scientists Create Detailed Human Heart Atlas

Researchers from UCL and the ESRF have created an unprecedented atlas of the human heart, imaging it down to 20 micrometers, equivalent to half the width of a human hair. This detailed study allows for a comprehensive understanding of cardiovascular disease, highlighting the impact of conditions like ischemic heart disease, responsible for 8.9 million global deaths in 2019. Using innovative X-ray techniques, the atlas provides insights into healthy and diseased hearts, aiding in potential advancements in treating arrhythmia and enhancing surgical training models.
