Stater Bros. Lays Off 63 Clerks Amid Inflation Challenges

Stater Bros. Markets has laid off 63 clerks for the first time in its 89-year history, citing inflation and tariffs as key factors. CEO Pete Van Helden explained that retail prices have surged by approximately 30% over the past four years, forcing the grocery chain to cut costs to remain competitive against non-union rivals like Walmart and Aldi. The layoffs have drawn criticism from the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW), with union leaders arguing that this move is detrimental to workers and could be an intimidation tactic during upcoming labor negotiations. Protests have erupted, with around 150 union members picketing at one location, calling for the rehiring of the laid-off clerks.
