Mudslide Kills Worker at Poteet Sandpit, Texas
A man was killed in a mudslide while operating heavy equipment at the Signal Peak Silica sand plant near Poteet, Texas, on Thursday morning. The incident occurred at the bottom of a deep sandpit, where the mudslide overturned the equipment and filled its cab with sand and mud, making rescue efforts challenging. First responders from the Atascosa County Sheriff's Office, local EMS, and the Poteet Fire Department had difficulty reaching the scene due to immobilized machinery. The victim, identified as Alan Herrarte by some reports and described as a 30-year-old man in others, was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the mudslide is still under investigation, and Signal Peak Silica confirmed the fatality involved a third-party contractor employee. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
