Sebastian Coe Discusses India's Olympic Aspirations

World Athletics president Sebastian Coe has expressed strong support for India's ambitions to host the 2036 Summer Olympics, emphasizing the importance of a proven track record in hosting international sporting events as a key factor in securing the bid. India is set to host its first World Athletics Continental Tour event in Bhubaneswar in 2025, and has submitted a letter of intent for the 2028 U-20 World Championships, showcasing its commitment to major global athletics events. Coe, who is also a candidate for the International Olympic Committee presidency, highlighted India's young population, vibrant commercial market, and political support as significant assets in its Olympic bid. He also proposed potential innovations for the Olympic Games, such as moving some indoor sports to the Winter Olympics, to adapt to climate change and modernize the Games. Coe has stressed the need for the IOC to leverage its members' talents more effectively, advocating for policies that protect female athletes and expand the Games' reach and relevance. Despite internal challenges within the Indian Olympic Association, India remains a strong contender for the 2036 Olympics, competing with countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Indonesia.
