Rising Car Insurance Costs Price Out Millions in UK
Citizens Advice has reported a significant increase in the number of individuals priced out of the UK car insurance market, with an estimated 2.6 million unable to drive due to high premiums. Over the past year, around 900,000 additional individuals have been unable to afford car insurance, as the average cost rose by 40% in two years to approximately £812. The research, conducted by Walnut Unlimited, revealed that about 3% of adults have not driven for at least a year due to costs, with 2% having dropped their coverage. Among benefit recipients, 25% have fallen behind on payments, and 33% have resorted to borrowing or cutting back on essentials. A 21-year-old office administrator shared her struggle, stating that her monthly insurance payment of £100 drains her budget. Citizens Advice emphasizes the need for urgent action to make insurance accessible for all.
