US Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has announced plans to introduce federal legislation that would make weather modification a felony, prohibiting the injection, release, or dispersion of chemicals or substances into the atmosphere to alter weather, temperature, climate, or sunlight intensity. Her proposed bill closely follows Florida's Senate Bill 56, recently signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis, which bans geoengineering and cloud seeding, imposing fines up to $100,000 and prison sentences of up to five years. Greene's push comes amid recent deadly floods in Texas and reflects conspiracy theories alleging government or private actors manipulate weather, claims widely discredited by scientific experts. Meteorologists and agencies like NOAA emphasize that cloud seeding is a small-scale practice used primarily to enhance precipitation and cannot cause large-scale weather events such as floods. Critics, including meteorologist Matthew Cappucci, have dismissed Greene's assertions as lacking scientific basis, highlighting that no technology exists for large-scale weather control. Despite the scientific consensus against such capabilities, Greene frames her bill as an effort to end what she calls "dangerous and deadly" weather modification practices allegedly funded by Democrats.
