LAPD Sergeant Shiou Deng Killed Assisting Crash Victims on 405 Freeway
Los Angeles Police Department Sergeant Shiou Deng, a 26-year veteran known for his compassionate service, was tragically killed early Monday morning while assisting at the scene of a two-vehicle collision on the southbound 405 Freeway near Brentwood. After stopping his patrol SUV and activating warning lights, Deng exited to help the involved motorists but was struck by a passing vehicle and later died at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. A man involved in the initial crash was also pronounced dead at the scene, and a third person was hospitalized with undisclosed injuries. The incident caused a significant shutdown of the southbound 405 Freeway during the morning rush hour, with lanes reopening around midday. LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, Mayor Karen Bass, and Governor Gavin Newsom publicly honored Sergeant Deng’s bravery and legacy, ordering flags to be flown at half-staff and expressing condolences to his family and colleagues. Memorial details are forthcoming as the community mourns the loss of a respected officer whose final act was one of service and sacrifice.
